Africa’s leading science media network, The Media for Environment, Science, Health and Agriculture (MESHA) www.meshascience.org is seeking science journalists to participate in a year long climate change media fellowship under its Action Research to Enhance Effective Coverage of Climate Change Issues in Africa (ARECCCA) project with support from IDRC Eastern and Southern Africa office based in Nairobi.

Kenyan journalists pose for a group photo during a recent awards ceremony by one of MESHA’s partners. The association has opened applications for its 2026 climate change media fellowship.

Here is the link of the call https://meshascience.org/areccca-climate-change-media-fellowship-2026-call-for-action-research/

During the year-long engagement, MESHA will provide story grants to the participants two times in a year to pursue their stories. Fellows will be required to identify and pitch for two key projects to work on throughout the year in phases.

Applicants will be required to share past copies of their climate stories which must conform to MESHA’s own requirements on reporting climate change from a gender lens. Additionally, potential Fellows must show that they have acquired media accreditation in their own countries.

According to Aghan Daniel, the association’s Chief Executive Officer, they will pick fellows who, through their applications would have demonstrable experience covering climate change and other environmental topics; an understanding of issues related to gender equality and social inclusion; demonstrable understanding of issues on the nexus between climate change and vulnerable groups such as women, youth, persons with disabilities, etc.

He added that ability to do mobile journalism and/or multimedia stories and a clear reporting and engagement plan for the Fellowship will also endear judges.

“Besides the above criteria, let the applicants mention their audience reach of the proposed media outlet(s) for which they intend to report,” he said.

This call is basically looking for up to 8 journalists who write or would want to write more on gender and climate change. For journalists who want to learn more about gender, we highly recommend that they undertake an online course on the subject at https://gei-in-research.pep-net.org. We also urge applicants to familiarise themselves with AU Agenda 2063, SDGs, etc.

The deadline is TIGHT, February 21, 2026.
