January 28, 2026 was a turning point in the life of six science journalists African media outfits namely MESHA (Kenya); HEJNU (Uganda), TAMWA (Tanzania), JournAIDS (Malawi), MESICA (Zambia) and Health Communicators Forum (Zimbabwe) as they formally adopted the African Media Science Cafes Consortium (AMSCC) Strategic Plan.

The Plan which runs from 2026 to 2030 was adopted as the shared strategic direction for the consortium whose membership is by the above six associations.

The six associations which have been working together for nearly ten years now under AVAC, the sponsors of the Strategic Plan, agreed to focus on five priorities for 2026 including development of organisational policies; Fundraising; Branding, visibility, and marketing. Others include collaboration and strategic partnerships; and capacity building for members and the Board.

Executive Director, Tanzania Media Women’s Association (TAMWA), Dr Rose Reuben. She is part of the science media consortium which has identified priority actions to enhance science journalism in the region.

The Consortium will soon announce plans about the forthcoming Eastern and Southern Africa Science Journalists Conference. The Consortium lead, Media for Environment, Science, Health and Agriculture (MESHA) recently held a highly successful IFAJ Congress of Agricultural Journalists in Nairobi. Prior to that MESHA has held six African Conference of Science Journalists in Nakuru and Nairobi between 2012 and 2023.
